Nicula Abbey
Nicula, an Orthodox monks' abbey is an important center for pilgrimage in Northern Transylvania. It is believed that the first church was built in 1552.
This one demised in fire in 1602 but between the years 1700 - 1712 the hermit Nicolae built a similar log church in the place of the old one and dedicated it to the Holy Trinity.
The Madonna made in 1681 by the Romanian priest Luca of Iclod was brought here. Due to this miracle maker Madonna the convent has become very well known in the area, in Muntenia, Moldova and even beyond the borders. The Madonna was tearing for several weeks some 300 years ago. This event is present in church documents through the testimony of those who witnessed it happen thus attesting the existence of a miracle.
The reality of this historical event is proven by the river of people that flow on the roads of Transylvania to the site of the miracle every 15th of August, the day of Assumption.
Nicula was considered the most representative center for painting Madonna on glass in Transylvania. The ones made here can now be found in the most remote private collections or museums of the world. This year The Center for Conservation and Promotion for Traditional Culture of Cluj started organizing children's camps where monk painters teach children the art of Madonna painting on glass.
It is a natural lake of fresh and clear water, supplied by some streams and numerous springs which guarantee its relatively constant volume.
